First game review: James Cameron's AVATAR - THE GAME

Today I am going to write a bit more. This is my first game review.

James Cameron's AVATAR - THE GAME

I have just finished playing James Cameron's AVATAR - THE GAME, developed by Ubisoft Montreal in 2009.
It is a third person-shooting game in the world of Pandora. Basically, it has nothing to do with the character and story in the movie, but is still about the conflict between RDA and Na’vi.
You follow the story line, do the missions that are assigned to you. You fight anything that threaten you and collect XP to improve your weapons and skills. You can carry 4 different weapons and 4 special skills to help you through the mission. Like the beginning of the movie, you get your avatar and then you have to choose a side whether to stay as a RDA or to help the Na’vi.

Here are the things I like about this game:

When there are upgrades of you weapons or armors or skills (basically just increase their capability), you don’t have to go to menu to select them, they will be armed automatically;

The graphics are the best thing in this game. Although it is not as good as Crysis, it still looks awesome;

The flying Banshee scene is great with awesome music, and is not too hard to control;

Te AMP suit is basically favored by most people who have seen the movie. It is quite an experience controlling a machine. It is cool but no melee, that is kind of disappointing;

The Na’vi’s melee fight is also cool, effective. It is much powerful than guns.

One thing that this game did right is that it automatically saves the game when you have to make a major decision which is to help the Na'vi or Human. Therefore, after finishing the games helping the Na'vi, you can load back the content and choose to help human, and you don't have to play the content before that decision again.

Things that are wrong or I don’t like about this game:

The bosses in the game are very easy to kill, almost no challenge;

The stories of the game for both races are the same. You have to collect songs from those “Willow trees” using shards, and use these songs to wake the “Well of souls” to save your race. (Sounds ridiculous to me);

You can drive transports as a RDA or ride creatures as a Na’vi through the map to complete missions. However, there is no sprint in the game, only dodge, so it will take you sometime to walk through the map to the target while you have to fight the enemies. That is kind of bored and I am tired of "running" (walking) and climbing in this huge sandbox with invisible boundary that you keep flying into, and the scene is the same with lots of vegetation and rocks everywhere;

The controls of this game are really easy and nothing too fancy, but in another word, it limits you action, for example: no sprint key;

Some of the special skills are totally out of the movie, like become invisible for a while or repel enemies within range;

There are teleport device for both side, good thing about it is that you can walk less, but it is too fake;

In one of the missions, I have to use my Na’vi stick weapon to bring down the C-21 Dragon Gunship;

You can only use C-21 Dragon Gunship or ride the Great Leonopteryx in the last mission;

There is an extra strategy game in it. You have to conquer the planet by building three kinds of troops using the credits you earned in the game to fight the opponents. Conquer regions by regions. It is kind of bored and to be honest, the one with the most troops will win and we obviously have limited resources to build troops.

Things that are wrong or I don’t like as being a RDA:

All weapons have a ridiculous limitation of the fire range. Even it is an enemy a hundred meters away, unless you it shows the enemies HP when your cursor reaches him, you won’t be able to reach him at all;

Grenade launcher is the strongest weapon. Players don’t have to consider the trajectory. It is automatic adjusted, and so sometimes it won’t shoot at the place you want it to;

The knife in front of the gun of the AMP suit is just a decoration, you can’t use it;

The gunships can only fire horizontally which means that it can’t shoot target on the ground from air. Same problems also happen to some of the ground vehicles with fire arms, they can only fire horizontally. If the enemies are up on the branch, just move on or get off and use your guns;

It is easy to die if you fell, because you live in a world that belongs to 3 meters tall Na’vi;

Machine gun is valid against Hammerhead Titanothere which has thick arm against bullets. This is not supposed to be happening;

There is no melee for RDA, so keep dodging and shooting;

Pistol is a basic weapon with unlimited ammo that must carry, but it is almost useless.

Things that are wrong or I don’t like as being a Na’vi:

In order to balance the power of RDA and the Na’vi, there are plants created to attack the RDA, like the Scorpion Thistle and even an anti-air plant;

Bows and arrows can shoot down gun ship from the ground;

The Banshee can’t be used to attack;

They don’t use their ponytails for anything;

The Na’vi should hate fire according to the movie, but they have torches and campfire all over their villages.

To sum up, it is "another World of Warcraft game" with better graphics. Although there are so many stuff that I don’t like about this game, it is still worth playing. It kept me playing straight for 8 hours and I am having fun of melee combat if I am not tired of walking through the sandbox! (That is the biggest problem! walking and climbing!)

Games

First of all, let me talk you what kind of games I like or dislike.
Games:
Other than fantasy (not interested in), racing and musical games (not good at), I like them all.
But some of them are good, and some of them suck. I will review both good and bad games, write down what I like about them as well as what I con't like.
My favourite: hard to say, there are many awesome games that I can't even rank them all, nevertheless Modern Warfare series are awesome.
